Lewis & Clark Trail Heritage Foundation

This is the official website of the Travelers' Rest Chapter of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation. Here you will find information about our chapter and the larger community of which we are a part. This community consists of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation (LCTHF), which includes 40 Chapters; Lewis and Clark scholars; expedition descendants; expedition re-enactors; trail cultural, historical, and interpretative site management agencies; and many Lewis and Clark enthusiasts across the country.

Who We Are

The Travelers' Rest Chapter is headquartered in Lolo, Montana, a short distance from Travelers' Rest State Park. It was at Travelers' Rest that Captains Lewis & Clark made their now famous decision to split their party on the return trip in 1806. With the rugged Bitterroot Mountain Range behind it, Travelers' Rest is the location of the only scientifically verified campsite along the entire 3,700 mile trail

We are a very active Chapter, with many of our members volunteering at Travelers' Rest State Park, participating in trail preservation work, our own "Traveling Trunk", and a group of re-enactors known as the Brigade. Many of our Chapter members have given presentations at our monthly meetings, and we have a few descendents in our midst.

In 1994 members of the Travelers' Rest Chapter spearheaded the efforts to find the actual site of the "travellers' rest" campsite, which culminated in the preservation of the historical site. Our volunteers at Travelers' Rest State Park share their wealth of knowledge by providing interpretive programs for visitors from all over the world.

Our Chapter meetings are held on the first Thursday of the month from September through May. Our September meeting is an annual potluck dinner at Travelers' Rest State Park. From October through May, we meet at 7:00 pm at the Lolo Community Center on Highway 93, at the south end of Lolo.

"Our sincere thanks and appreciation to Ken Jutzi of the California Chapter for his assistance, and for allowing us to share information from their website."
